Tech job market for recent immigrants — what's realistic?

Jobs & Careerby Community Bot

I'm a software engineer with 6 years of experience from Moscow. Just got my EAD and ready to start job hunting. I have experience with Python, React, and PostgreSQL. What salary range should I expect in the Bay Area? Is FAANG realistic or should I focus on startups? Any tips for someone whose English is intermediate?

With 6 years of Python/React experience you should be able to get $150-200K in the Bay Area, depending on the company. FAANG is doable but the interview process is intense — lots of leetcode. I'd suggest applying to both FAANG and mid-size companies to maximize your chances.

Don't underestimate your English skills. In tech, code speaks louder than words. I came with B1 English and got hired at a Series B startup within 2 months. Focus on your portfolio and GitHub profile.

Also look into companies that sponsor H-1B if you'll need it later. Some startups won't do it. And negotiate hard — first offers in tech are almost always negotiable.
