Fenway Park in Boston is the home ballpark of the Boston Red Sox, and fans have been coming here since 1912. It stands in the Fenway neighborhood at 4 Jersey Street, near the Kenmore and Fenway Green Line stations. Even if you do not follow baseball, a tour is worth it: tours run every day of the year, rain or snow, and take visitors up to the famous Green Monster wall.
Fenway Park history since 1912
Before Fenway, the Red Sox played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds (1901-1911), a site now occupied by Northeastern University. The club says the first official game at Fenway was played on April 20, 1912, after two days of rainouts. The Red Sox beat the New York Highlanders (today's Yankees) 7-6 in 11 innings before 27,000 fans, with Tris Speaker driving in the winning run. News of the Titanic sinking pushed the story off the top of Boston's front pages.
Key dates from the club's ballpark history page:
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1912 | April 26: the first Fenway home run, over the left-field wall |
| 1926 | May 8: the left-field foul line bleachers burned down and were not replaced |
| 1934 | January 5: a fire nearly destroyed the renovation begun by new owner T.A. Yawkey |
| 1934 | April 17: the rebuilt Fenway opened, and the original wooden left-field wall was removed |
| 1936 | a 23-foot screen went up above the left-field wall |
| 1946 | Skyview seats were added |
| 1947 | June 13: the first night game, a 5-3 win over the White Sox |
Capacity was 35,000 in 1912. For 2001 the club lists 33,577 for day games and 33,993 for night games.
Fenway Park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on March 7, 2012, according to the National Park Service weekly list. A National Park Service blog post that summer noted that the park had been threatened with demolition not long before.
What to see: the Green Monster and more
The Green Monster is the left-field wall, 37 feet 2 inches high by the club's figure. Tours take you up on top of it for the view over the field.

The Royal Rooters Club and the Right Field Roof Deck. The short Fenway in Fifteen tour visits the Nation's Archives at the Royal Rooters Club and ends on the roof deck with a view of the park and the Boston skyline.

How to get to Fenway Park on the T

| Fenway | D | 411 Park Dr; no elevators, escalators or parking |
From the suburbs the club suggests park-and-ride at Riverside (Green Line D), Braintree or Quincy Adams (Red Line, change to the Green Line at Park Street), Oak Grove or Wellington (Orange Line, change at North Station) and Wonderland (Blue Line, change at Government Center). - Diaper bags and bags with essential medical equipment are exceptions.

- No exit and re-entry at any gate. No smoking or vaping anywhere in the park, Jersey Street included.
On game days, a bag that does not fit the rules can be stored for a fee with a third-party locker truck on top of the Lansdowne Garage across from Gate E. The full list is on the club's security page.
